Create and configure a membership

Configure membership details, billing, visibility, reach, benefits, integrations, and launch settings without changing existing member terms unexpectedly.

Create memberships under Products → Memberships. The setup flow separates basic product terms from benefits and integrations so you can review the complete offer before making it available.

Before creating the product, decide:

  • whether payment is one-time or recurring;
  • how validity, commitment, and cancellation should work;
  • which benefits are included and whether they repeat on renewal;
  • whether the membership belongs to one venue or the whole company;
  • how customers will find the product.

The membership types and examples guide can help with the first two decisions.

Basic details

Use a name and description that state the practical value and essential terms. Customers see these in the shop, so include any important limits that are not obvious from the price alone.

You can add cover and square images to keep the product recognizable in different shop views. Follow the same naming and visual style as your other products.

Reach

A membership can belong to:

  • one venue, when benefits and administration are local; or
  • all venues in the company, when the same membership should be recognized throughout the company.

Company-wide reach is different from an external membership. Company-wide products are your own shared memberships; external memberships recognize a product owned by an authorized partner. See Membership reach and external memberships.

Billing and validity

Choose One-time payment or Recurring payment, then configure the fields relevant to that model.

For one-time memberships, choose:

  • a number of valid days;
  • a fixed date range; or
  • no end date.

You can also enable deferred payment. When enabled, the customer can join before staff make payment due.

For recurring memberships, set:

  • billing period length in days, at least seven;
  • normal tax-inclusive recurring price;
  • an optional fixed contract period count; or
  • an optional termination period count.

You can then add a trial or introductory pricing. These affect billing stages, not the underlying membership type. See Membership pricing and trials.

Price and payment options

Set the membership price and VAT rate. Depending on your venue configuration, you can also:

  • allow payment with the customer's Thril credit balance;
  • mark the product as eligible for Finnish sports or culture benefits;
  • attach applicable purchase discounts or promo codes.

Applicable discounts reduce the initial purchase or eligible deferred checkout. They do not reduce later recurring renewals. Trial pricing takes precedence when an eligible trial applies.

Reservation discounts and reservation custom pricing are membership benefits and affect bookings, not the membership purchase price.

Benefits and booking controls

Add benefits that should be available while the member is active, including:

  • reservation discounts or member-specific reservation rates;
  • credits or session cards, once or on each successful renewal;
  • earlier booking or a membership-specific reservation window;
  • reservation restrictions, each covering all reservations or only the days, times, sports and courts you choose, and each either blocking the reservation or charging the standard price.

Some products, events, tournaments, and courses can also be configured separately to give discounts to holders of this membership.

See Benefits and booking rules before combining several booking rules. Their precedence is not always additive.

Confirmation email

Add a purchase confirmation email when new members need practical instructions beyond the shop description. You can set the subject, preview text, and rich-text body.

Useful content includes:

  • when benefits and access begin;
  • where to find access codes;
  • which venue rules apply;
  • how recurring cancellation works;
  • a link to the relevant customer instructions.

Do not rely on the email to introduce a material contract term that is absent from the product description or sales process.

Shop visibility

Choose visibility according to how the membership should be sold:

VisibilityCustomer experienceCommon use
VisibleListed in the venue shop and available by direct linkPublic membership
HiddenNot listed, but anyone with the direct link can access and purchase itInvitation, partner, or campaign link
Not availableNot listed and cannot be purchased through a direct product pageDraft, retired, or temporarily closed product

Hidden is not an access-control list. A direct link can be shared onward. Use it for discoverability control, not confidential eligibility.

Review before launch

Check the membership as a complete offer rather than reviewing each field in isolation:

  1. Confirm the initial price and each later recurring price stage.
  2. Confirm whether the agreement is fixed, open-ended, or subject to notice.
  3. Check benefit restrictions against real sports, resources, times, and durations.
  4. Verify company-wide or venue-only reach.
  5. Review access-control times and groups where configured.
  6. Read the shop description and confirmation email as a customer.
  7. Set the intended visibility and test the customer-facing product.

Editing a live membership

Product edits do not all affect current members in the same way.

Changes that generally affect current members

Benefits, booking restrictions, and venue or company-wide reach are read from the current membership product. Editing them can therefore change what existing active members receive, where those benefits are recognized, or how they can reserve. Physical-access integrations remain separately configured.

Changes that apply to future members

The following terms are captured on each member record when the member joins:

  • normal member price;
  • recurring period length;
  • fixed or termination period counts;
  • active dates;
  • trial end;
  • assigned introductory pricing.

Changing these product settings does not rewrite existing members. Use member management tools when a specific current member needs a different price or validity.

Before changing benefits on a live product, consider current members. Before changing commercial terms, update the shop description and confirmation email so future purchases match the new configuration.

Duplicate, hide, or delete

Duplicating a membership copies the product configuration, custom reservation-pricing rules, and integration settings. It does not copy members. The duplicate begins unavailable from the shop so you can review it before publishing.

Use Hidden or Not available when sales should stop without deleting history. Deletion is blocked while the membership still has current or future members or pending membership payments. Deleting a product is not a way to terminate its members.

For member-level changes, continue to Manage members.
